Small Town Entertainment

Yesterday I took Leah to the eye doctor. I dropped her off and went to get a Dr. Pepper from Whataburger (they have the biggest drinks for the least amount). On my way back I saw a black sedan in the parking lot of the center Leah was at and it had smoke coming out the hood. It looked like it was overheating. I was at a stoplight and by the time I got into the parking lot the smoke was billowing. I may have forgot to mention this but I was in Alvin, TX a small town near where we live. I pulled into the parking lot and parked in safe watching distance. I sipped on my Diet Dr. Pepper and watched the care grow from smoke to billowing flames. Of course in this small town I wasn’t the only one. All of the sudden cars came out of nowhere to watch this event. They would get out of there cars and take pictures. It seemed the whole town came to watch. Finally after the tires popping and the front windows exploding the fire department arrived and put out the fire. I started my truck back up and drove on down the center to pick up Leah from her appointment. I have to say, you can take the boy out of the country (read small town), but you can’t take the country out of the boy (again read small town).

The Morning at the Doctor’s Office, The Afternoon at the Eye Doctor

Today is the day for Medical Care, well at least for Leah. She has been sick since Sunday before Thanksgiving. Finally it got so bad that she just couldn’t go to work. We went to the doctor this morning and we have good medication for her now. This afternoon she already had an eye appointment planned. So for the middle of the day she will rest and I will take care of some things around here. I have paperwork to fill out and names and faces to learn. Also, I need to plan one last trip to Abilene before the actual move and start.

November 28, 1951

The above was the date that a little girl was born to two wonderful parents. That girl grew up found a man born the same year but two months previous. They fell in love and after graduating high school were married. Those two love birds had the two best sons that have ever walked the earth. And yes, I am one of them.

Today is my mother’s birthday! Out of complete respect for her I will not tell you her age (psst…look at the date above). I will tell you though that she has been the best mother in all the world. I couldn’t have ordered a mom any better. My brother and I were all she had at one point and she never let us down. Every school event was attended, food was on the table (whether it was McDonalds, Whataburger, or El Zarape, it was on the table), the house was clean (because she saw to it we cleaned it), and we were at church every Sunday and Wednesday. My mom is the best!

Two of my favorite stories of my mom:

My mom taught me how to ride my bike. This was different from my brother. My brother was taught by my dad. They would go out to the parking lot of the apartments that my dad was living at and take Wyatt’s bicycle by the back of the seat and go up and down the parking lot with him until he could balance himself. It was right out of “Leave it to Beaver”. My mom had different methods. I told my mom that I wanted to learn how to ride my bike. I got on the bike went a few yards and fell. When I went into the house to tell mom I had fallen and that I needed help, she looked into my teary eyes and with the fullness of love and compassion said, “Get out there and get on the bike again, you’re not hurt, just go out and try again, you can ride that bike!” Oh, the love that I felt. It wasn’t the same as having someone behind you holding your seat, but it worked and I can ride a bike.

My other story is when mom went to help out our neighbor down the street. They went to our church and were leaving out of town. I was in college at this time. They asked mom if she would look after the dogs while they were away. Being a good servant mom went down and fed the dogs like she had done so many times. They had two dogs a little inside dog, Spanky, and an outside Labrador, Cairo. Spanky just wanted love and attention and was a breeze to handle. Cairo, however, was young full of energy and huge. Mom fed spanky and went to feed Cairo and let him out. Then she asked him to kennel up. Cairo was trained very well, but did not quite listen this time. Mom decided to take matters into her own hands and treat this dog like one of her own kids. She grabbed his leash and was going to force him to kennel. Cairo had other plans saw the opportunity and he went running across all over the backyard. Of course mom wasn’t far behind because she was still hanging onto the leash and was dragged wherever Cairo went. She called me on the phone later and told me of the event and we laughed all night and still laugh about it today.

My mom wasn’t the typical “June Cleaver” mom. However, she loved us, cared for us, and raised us well. Both my brother and I have a wonderful relationship with her. She continues to give all she has to her marriage of 21 years to Walde Schiurring and to her two boys and their families. She is funny, eccentric, and Godly.

My mom is a Godly woman! She continues to grow in her faith, while not taking herself too seriously. She is a constant source of encouragement and service to her church. She is dedicated to the church and to her family. She loves her children and their families. She loves her family and she loves life.

I Love You Mom!

Happy Birthday from Michael and Leah!

Study of David

Today the preacher at Clear Lake began a sermon series on David and how God worked in his life. I think its going to be a good series, of course, I will only hear a few of the sermons. The thought that I have had, though, has been how do I live my life in such a way that I could be considered a man after God’s own heart. Then today I received a letter from one of my current students telling me how much I have influenced her spiritual life.

It just goes to show that even though we are not perfect, we can be used by God. I am so excited about my future and how God will use me in Abilene. I know myself well enough to know that I won’t be perfect, but I hope that I can influence students and others there for Christ.

My prayer will change from being perfect to being one who chooses daily to follow Jesus. If I can be someone who follows Christ it will show in my life and others will want to follow as well. That’s my prayer, the rest is details!

80% Chance of Rain / 20% Chance House Lights are put Up

My goal for Saturday was to put our Outside lights up on the house. I guess I didn’t check the weather. There is an 80% chance of rain and it has done nothing but since early this morning. It has been pouring down off and on all morning. We needed some rain so I am glad its here. I will have time some other day to do the lights. Leah and I are going to her classroom today to work there and have it ready for Monday. I think my job is to put up a Christmas tree. It will be fun! I keep forgetting that today is Saturday, but I am thankful for another day to rest and be with Leah.

I have one last thing to do for my graduate school work this year. I have a final to take that includes a 10 page paper for my Revelation course. That is what next week will be about for me. Everything else for my other class and this one has been finished.

I am gearing up for my new job and trying to pack my office. So I have that on my plate as well. Everything is coming together. January will be here before I know it.

Leah has been sick with sinus crud all week long, but seems to be feeling better today. So, hopefully she will make a full recovery!

Well, I gotta go to get ready for the day!

The Day After

What a great holiday! Fill your belly and rest the entire next day. We are blessed to have another feast at Leah’s parents today. So we get more than one Thanksgiving Feast! Today is also one of the biggest days of shopping. I am thankful that we have no desire to fight that kind of crowd. I am sure it is good for some to roam through a sea of people, wait in hour long lines, save 20%, and wear your emotions, physical body, and patience! I am sure there are more than one who live for this day and would say its better than the previous day’s turkey. I am sure that there are some really sane people who use all Thanksgiving week to rationalize the insanity of Friday’s shopping. I am sure that my mom, aunt, and other family members are out there today. And although I may question there mental capacities and have already hired a therapist for each, I love them and hope they get me something good! Good Luck!

I love the day after Thanksgiving to rest, eat, and tease others about shopping. I hope that you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. The Lord has blessed our family richly this year and continues to bless us! We know we don’t deserve the many things God has given us, but we take the time to thank Him and His love for us through the sacrifice of His Son.

Happy Thanksgiving

Today is the day of the Turkey. Leah is almost done getting ready and I had a little time. We are heading to my Dad’s house today, nearby. I just wanted to wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!

Holidays

I love the holidays. It is a great time to see family and eat some good home cooking. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I am looking forward to the Turkey and Dressing and all the fixins. Today Leah and I are taking some time to just be together. I have been blessed to be excused from my office duties here at Clear Lake so that I can make preparations for our move. I have been going into the office to take care of some last minute stuff. However, today I am not going in and just spending time with my wife. Tomorrow we will be shared with my family and on Friday we will be shared with her family.

So what do we do when we are together and want to spend time together; we go shopping! Leah and I are going to take care of some Christmas shopping today. We decided to make it a day, so we are taking our annual Christmas time trip to the Galleria. You ask, “Michael, you like to shop?” I answer, “I am good for about 30 minutes, then I want to sit down and watch other people shop, but I will do this to be with my wife!” However, shopping at the Galleria is an experience, especially in the holiday season.

I will enjoy my day with my wife! The next two days we will enjoy time with our families!

Not sure if I will be blogging the next couple of days, but recently that’s par for the course.

Life in Transition = Not So Light

I never meant to say on my last blog that moving was a light ordeal. However, in the grand scheme of life, it’s just a blip. Today and until January it is a really big BLIP! Our life right now is in great transition. This is my last week in the office at Clear Lake, we are in the midst of selling our house in League City, finding a home in Abilene, finding Leah a job in Abilene, and me beginning a new job. So I guess Brock and Cory were right, it’s nothing light.

Transitions are good! They help you see what has happened in the past and lies before you in the future. When God’s people were wandering 40 years they had much time to reflect on their past slavery and dream of the promised land (that they would never see). I have not been in slavery by any means and my promised land doesn’t exist here on earth. However, the transitioning point is the same to reflect and to dream.

Yesterday Leah and I were in Abilene looking for a house. While there I dropped in the office at Highland to say hello and get some paperwork to fill out. It felt really natural and great to be talking ministry and plans with Sarah and Kara. It was great to see people I had worked with before when I was an intern and will get to work with again. This process of interviewing and transitioning is now 7 months ongoing and it is finally beginning to feel real. Life is changing!

We will miss our family, our house, our friends, and the city. However, we are excited about a new church, new ministry, new friends, and new opportunities. We know that God is in the mix of all these things. In light of that I implore your prayers

Prayer Request:

Leah finds a job teaching in Abilene
Our League City house sells
We find a place to live in Abilene
We stay healthy in the process
The rest of our transition remains smooth.

May God bless You as You serve Him

Something Light

I am taking a break from deep thinking and writing and will just write random thoughts today.

KSBJ
I teared up twice on the way to work today because the morning show on KSBJ was running a special having parents call in to brag on their kids. It reminded me as parents talked about how their children are spiritual leaders among their schools and friends that God is still working and Christianity, not to mention ministry, is so much fun!

Food, Just Give Me Food!
This past weekend I was extremely sick with the stomach flu. However, by Tuesday I was mostly 100%, which I guess is more like 90%. “Food, Just Give Me Food” was my cry that evening. And just so you know crackers and bread isn’t “food”.

We Are Moving
God has led us to a knew opportunity for ministry in Abilene, TX at the Highland Church of Christ. I start there as a co-youth minister on January 1st. We are both excited about the move and are being faithful to God’s call.

House for Sale
We are selling our house. Which is a weird deal. You spend half the day living in your house and the other half trying to make it appear that you don’t.

Caffeine Addicts
If you love caffeine you need to go this site Caffeine Kills. It’s a great way to know what your favorite drink does for you.

Thanks for entertaining my random bits.
